The September 27, 2004 issue of Newsweek has numerous articles on the Mind and Body connection.
While it is nice to see a major publication explore this vital health link, it is important to note that chiropractic has been focused on the mind-body connection since its inception as a healing art. The mind-body connection is, after all, the communication network between the control centers of the brain and the tissue cells of the body. This communication network is what we work with every day...its known as the spinal cord and spinal nerves.
That said, there are numerous bits of vital and enlightening information. Here are some highlights:
"Given that heart disease is still the nation's leading killer, we could all benefit from an ounce of prevention...even 10 minutes of meditation a day can help with prevention."
"Repeated studies have shown that conscious relaxation and meditation can counteract stress by lowering heart rate and blood pressure, and reducing levels of the stress hormones in the bloodstream."
"Meditation and relaxation training can enhance immune function." "Active people are happier than sofa-jockeys and less prone to depression and suicide." "When depressed patients were put on an exercise program, 60% improved within 4 months. The same proportion reported relief on anti-depressants. Those that exercised maintained their benefits by a 3 to 1 margin."
According to the Newsweek article at the heart of this article, scientists are now mapping the pathways that link emotion and health. We are excited and delighted that science is focusing on the nervous system in health and disease. The article says that the challenge is for the rest of us to put their discoveries to work. Chiropractic represents the mind-body connection and has been putting that connection to work for 100 years.
Forgiveness A Healthy Lifestyle Choice
"Revenge is sweet, but letting go of anger at those who wronged you is a smart route to good health. It's a process, not a moment. Forgiveness is cultivated."
-E.M. Hollowell, Harvard Psychiatrist
"If you devote your life to seeking revenge, first dig two graves."
-Confucius
